LACROSSE, Wis. – A North Side fixture, the Sweet Shop, celebrated its 100th anniversary with a visit from State Senator Brad Pfaff and State Representative Jill Billings with a citation for being in busines so long. Cecil Allen started the shop in 1921 and survived the Great Depression and World War II. His great nephew, Bill Espe, the current proprietor, said when things look bleak, like the Covid pandemic, he takes inspiration from his great uncle’s perseverance. To celebrate the 100th birthday, Espe offered cones and sundaes for $1. How about the next 100 years? His daughter and son-in-law are taking over.
