CAMPBELL, Wis. – A police chase at 137 mph ended on French Island when the pursued motorist ran out of gas. Police arrested Amy Torres, 36, of Fargo, North Dakota. She had a long tale about visiting friends in Austin and making a wrong turn onto Interstate 90 to go home. One-hundred miles later, near LaCrosse, a Campbell police officer clocked her at 119 mph in a 70 zone anf gave chase. Suddenly realizing she was going east on I-90, not west, Torres turned around at the Bangor interchange and kept on going, albeit west toward Austin and Fargo this time. Police caught up with her stalled on the westbound Mississippi River bridge back to Minnesota with her hazard lights activated. Police noticed a half-empty beer can in a cup holder. Torres said hadn’t been drinking, and, indeed, a field sobriety test showed no sign of impairment. In the car also, police said, were a smoking device with burned marijuana residue and a grinder with one gram of marijuana.
