CALEDONIA, Wis. – A man filling up his car at a Wisconsin gas station was shot and killed by another man. The shooter the scene byt was himself killed in a shootout with an undercover sheriff’s officer. This was about 7:30 a.m. at the Interstate 94 Pilot mega-truck stop in Caledonia, near Racine. Police said the shooter, John R. McCarthy age 32, of Hartland, approached the man filling his tank and “viciously executed” him. Both men were white. A third person driving through the Pilot parking lot was fired upon but not hit. McCarthy then approached a person filling up at a Mobil station two miles away. The target this time happened to be an undercover sheriff’s investigator. The two men exchanged gunfire. McCarthy was struck several times and killed. The investigator was taken to a Racine hospital with a bullet wound but reported conscious and alert. Sheriff Chris Schmaling said he had no idea what precipitated the attack.
