VOLNEY, Iowa – A trailer load of kayaks became loosened and fell into the path of an oncoming motorcyclist. The biker, John Thein, 75, of Guttenberg, was killed. The accident happened on County Road X26 along the Yellow River. The accident was about 10:50 a.m. The kayaks were being hauled behind a pickup truck, the Iowa State Patrol said. The 50-mile Yellow River is popular for rafting, tubing and kayaking. It courses through scenic vegetated limestone cliffs and empties into the Mississippi River between Harpers Ferry and Marquette.
