SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A Purple Heart has been awarded a Wisconsin Marine who is recovering from serious injuries during the terrorist attack on an evacuation station at the Kabul airport August 26. Michael Gretzon,19, of the Marinette County village of Wausaukee, suffered a traumatic brain injury and left arm and eardrum injuries. Gretzon was among 18 soldiers wounded jn the August 26 attack. Thirteen soldiers and 60 Afghan civilians died. He was evacuated to a U.S. military hospital in Germany, then to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, and then to a naval hospital in San Diego for further medical care and occupational therapy. At home he had been a volunteer firefighter at Amberg. Fire Chief Jim Parr told television station WBAY that it had been Gretzon’s lifelong dream to be a Marine. “He accomplished that goal,” said Par said.
