WINONA, Minn. – Two water mains burst in West Burns Valley, rendering water to the largely residential area unsafe for drinking. The breaks were in a swampy area along State Highway 43 that leads from Winona up the bluffs to Wilson and Interstate 90. The city Water Department said water needs to be boiled before drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and preparing food in a roughly 40-block area east of Sugar Loaf:

> West Burns Valley Road east of the 530 address.
Unaffected was the hotel district at Highway 61 intersection with Highway 43. Brian DeFrang, city public works director, said there were two beaks:
> A small pipe along Highway 43.
> A larger 20-inch main near East Burns Valley Road.
The water distribution system lost pressure and some homes water service altogether. Unpurified groundwater or soil possibly got into the water main, he said Crews and contractors were able to reroute clean water to some homes relatively quickly, DeFrang expected both broken mains to be repaired within 24 hours
