CLEARBROOK, Minn. – Canadian pipeline operator Enbridge missed a deadline to clean up damage from its Line 3 construction, which is threatening aquifer groundwater. The deadline, imposed by the Minnesota Natural Resources Department, was Friday. The DNR said it was poised levy more fines on the company, which already faces $3.3 million in penalties for the Clearbrook problem. Also, the DNR said, Enbridge has had two other recent environment-threatening problems on the controversial Line 3 rerouting project across northern Minnesota. The Clearbrook disruption, at Pump Station 10, is between Thief River Falls and Grand Rapids is in prime wild-rice swamp country. The break isn’t Enbridge’s first disaster at Clearbrook. In 2007 two Enbridge workers were killed when a fire erupted while they were repairing a leak in the original Line 3 pipeline.
