ST. PAUL, Minn. – The avian bird flu among birds doesn’t affect human beings. “The food supply is safe,” Governor Tim Walz said to calm public jitters. “Get out and buy poultry and turkey. We got it.” Minnesota turkey and chicken producers have been forced wipe out two million birds to slow the spread among flocks, but millions of unaffected birds are still moving through production and distribution lines to the public. Eggs too are OK for human consumption, Walz said. So far the flu has affected 40 production sites – some factory scale, some backyard — in 20 Minnesota counties.
