WINONA, Minn. – Roger Allen Carlson, of Winona, the retired chair of the geography department at Winona State University whose world travels included 70 countries, died at age 88. He held bachelor and master degrees from UCLA and a doctorate from the University of Nebraska. In his undergrad years he worked on the NASA Apollo moon landing program. At Winona State he developed new courses in cultural geography, climatology, map reading, cartography and remote sensing. He sang tenor in the Winona Barbershoppers. He also sang local quartets, including Pair A Docs and Sound Tradition. In the mid-1950s he was stationed in Germany and developed a strong interest in travel and foreign languages. In 1989 he made a trip around the world.
