RED WING, Minn. – A 5-year-old boy remained in critical but improving condition four days after a Mississippi River barge ran over his family’s pleasure boat. Rachel Koenig said brain scans show encouraging brain activity for her son, Vincent – even though he was without a heartbeat 45 minutes. The boy was pulled from unconscious the river. CPR was performed on-shore while rescuers wanted for a hospital helicopter to arrive from Rochester 45 miles away. The father, Jeremey Koenig, 45, was out fishing with his three children when the boat’s motor failed. The boat was driven by the current into the barge’s path. Except for Vincent, all were rescued quickly. His father was able to recover Vincent only when he spotted the bright orange souls of the boy’s shoes in the murky water.

Bedded and wired. Vincent Koenig, 5, remains hospitalized in intensive care. His family released this picture.
