WINONA, Minn.  – A neighbor called about an untended bonfire at a house in the 700 block of West Fifth Street. It was not uncommon for the occupant to light the fire pit and leave., the neighbor said. Indeed, the occupant wasn’t around. However, the occupant of  arrived back while firefighters were still there. He was told the fire was too close to the house, was fueled with unapproved materials, and lacked a spark arrester screen.  He was given a copy of the city Recreational Fire Code and encouraged to read it. This was about 2:20 p.m.
