BAY CITY, Wis. — Two people flying from Rochester to Red Wing were killed when their home-built plane crashed short of the Red Wing airport. Sheriff Nancy Hove declined to release the victims’ names immediately. The plane went down in a field about 1:40 p.m. It was on a straight-line 40-minute training flight. The craft was approaching the 5,000-foot runway at the Red Wing Airport, which is on flat tableland across the Mississippi River near Bay City, Wisconsin. The victims were flying a 10-year-old Glasair Super II, a stubby two-passenger craft that is built from a kit. The craft weighs 1,400 pounds empty, 2,100 fully fueled. It typically flies 200 mph.
