MADISON, Wis. – Slightly fewer deer hunters were expected in the field for the opening Saturday of the nine-day Wisconsin season. About 550,000 licenses have been sold, compared with 564,440 licenses last year. The state wildlife agency said sales have been trending down about 1.5% annually since 2000. Why? Older hunters are aging out faster than young people are filling their ranks, the agency said.
