WINONA, Minn. – The person on the phone claimed to be from Publishers Clearing House. The magazines sounded like a good deal, so the recipient of the call, in Winona, agreed to buy $1,200 in gift cards for payment and call back. The next stage of the deal, the caller said, was to open a bank account to receive the payment. Finally the magazine purchaser figured something wasn’t right and called police. The saga ended about 3:55 p.m. in a sad police interview in victim’s home in the 900 block of East Fifth Street. The place will have no new magazines arriving.
