MINNEAPOLIS – The criminal complaint against a Minnesota accused of planning a terrorist attack lists counts of illegally possessing a machine gun and attempting to buy hand grenades. The complaint was read to River William Smuth 20, of Savage, by a U.S District Court magistrate. More startling were reports from informants and the agent who had posed to Smith as a weapons supplier. The sources said that Smith:
> Had characterized himself as “pro mass shooting.”
> Expressed sympathy for the Parkland school shooter in Florida, who killed 17 people and wounded 17 others in 2018.
> Called the shooter in this November’s Q Club massacre in Colorado a hero. The shooter took five lives and wounded 19.
> Talked about an “intense dislike” of black, Jewish and gay people.
> Wanted to join The Base, a neo-Nazi group.
> Was prepared to fight police and to die in the fight.
Possessed terrorism intent, tools too. Had joined a Prior Lake gun club in March. Hd wore black tactical gear and bod armor, which club patrons called odd. His explanation: “I’m in armor and a helmet cause that’s how I’d shoot if I was really in combat.” He lamented being too young to make firearm purchases legally but said his grandmother had been supplying him with guns and ammo.
