WINONA, Minn. – Apparently Taylor John Kujak mistook the police station parking lot for a carnival bumper-car ride. It was a bizarre experience for all involved, according to the police write-up. After a downtown police chase, police said, Kujak accelerated through the police parking lot and rammed into a parked squad car. The impact bumped the squad car almost into the police garage. This, according to police, was after Kujak crashed into another squad car in a chase in that started on the south lawn of the Courthouse — next to the police station, no less. Here’s the sequence of what happened, according to police:

About 10:30 p.m. police were called about a black SUV on the grass at the courthouse off Third Street. The first officer at the scene saw the SUV driving off onto Johnson Street and tried to block the vehicle. It didn’t work. The driver dodged the police car and sped off. To hell with intersection traffic lights, the driver charged through downtown. All the while, the driver called 911 with a mobile device and threatened to run down people and vehicles on the street. Police threw out a spike strip on Fourth Street, but the driver evaded the spikes. Moments later he was back at the Courthouse. In the next-door police station parking lot he accelerated into the parked squad car. There, his vehicle immobilized, Kujak was arrested. Was he drunk? Police suspect so. His blood was drawn and was sent to a lab for testing. In all of this, no injuries were reported.

Kujak, 24, of Winona, was jailed on pending charges fleeing police in a motor vehicle, damaging property, reckless driving, failing to stop at a traffic collision, driving under the influence.
