WINONA, Minn.– A Winona man, Gregory Ivan Shines, 34, was jailed after a report that he broke a vodka bottle over another person’s head as they were driving on Fifth Street on the West End. Bleeding profusely, the injured person was stitched back together at the hospital. It took four stitches. The man told police that the incident happened about midnight near Fifth and High Street. First, the person said, Shines punched him in the face. Then came the vodka bottle, which broke. Police found Shines walking nearby. Things got worse. Police said Shines coughed twice in an officer’s face and said, “I’m sick. I got the virus.” At the police station Shines was booked for assault with a deadly weapon. There also was a second charge: Assault of a peace officer.
