WINONA, Minn. – A bicyclist died, apparently instantly, when hit by a car at a stop light intersection on Highway 61. Killed was Matthew Michael Tipton, 40, of Buffalo, Minnesota. The accident was about 8:40 p.m., after dark, at the Vila Street intersection into the Dahl and Sugar Loaf auto dealerships, the Winona Mall, and the Gundersen clinic. The intersection is used by mountain bikers between a bluff trailhead at Holzinger Lodge and car parking spaces at the mall and clinic. Tipton was crossing toward the car lots. The driver of the car, Thomas Daniel Holst, 58, and his passenger, Susan Grace Holst, 56. were unhurt. They are from Lanesboro. They were driving a 2020 Honda Accord.
