LACROSSE, Wis. – The Navy aerial demonstration team Blue Angels will perform with new A-18 Super Hornets at the Deke Slayton Airfest this weekend at the La Crosse airport. The team began in November shows with the new jets, replacing early-generation Hornets from 34 years ago. Airfest organizers are charging $20 admission for a six-person car pod with a military veteran, up to $75 per pod for everyone else. Gates at 9 a.m., airshow at 4 p.m.. Among attractions:

> Susan Dacy flying the Super Steadman Big Red biplane.

> Michael Vaknin in his Extra 300 low-wing aerobatic monoplane.

> Vanguard Squadron multi-plane aerial demonstrations.

> Dave Scott flying the three-blade prop S1W biplane.

> Grant Nielsen flying his uniquely painted1,200-pound 300-horsepower CAP 232, called “Bubbles.”

> Kyle Fowler’s swept-wing Long Z aerobatics with wingtip rudders

Because of airport construction and other factors, like the Covid pandemic, this is the first time in seven years that the airfest is back in La Crosse. It bears the name of Sparta-born Mercury 7 astronaut Deke Slayton, who died in 1993. Organizers said the airfest probably won’t be back in Lacrosse until 2024.
