HEROLD, Wis. – About 100 cattle were lost in a barn fire that took firefighters five hours to quell. Besides the cattle, no one was injured. Firefighters from Alma, 10 miles west, were the first to arrive. That was about 2:40 a.m. They were soon supplemented by volunteer units from Buffalo, Dunn, Pepin and Trempealeau counties and from Wabasha County across the river in Minnesota. Besides the barn, several nearby structures also were destroyed.
