BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Deer hunters need to be extra careful not to have elk tn their sights this hunting season. Scott Roepke, a regional state wildlife supervisor, said bull elk have been spotted roaming in southwest and southeast Wisconsin. Elk are part of project to re-establish a herd in Wisconsin after a 100-year absence. “Deer hunters in this area aren’t used to seeing elk,” Roepke said. He noted that some young elk are roaming from beyond ranges where they were brought in from Kentucky and elsewhere in 1995. This includes a range near Black River Falls.
