MINNEAPOLIS —Former Vice President Walter Mondale, a liberal icon in the U.S. Senate for two terms, died at age 93. He was vice president under Jimmy Carter, but the Carter-Mondale ticket lost a re-election bid in 1980. Mondale himself was the Democratic candidate for president in 1984 but lost election after leveling with voters that a tax increase was needed. The campaign was notable for Mondale’s choice of Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate. She was the first woman on a major party ticket in U.S.  history. . Earlier Mondale was Minnesota as attorney general. Later, from 1993 to1996, h was U.S. ambassador to Japan.
