MADISON, Wis. – Wild turkeys are less susceptible to the avian flu than many other fowl, according to state migratory game bird biologist Taylor Finger. Most contagion is between migratory birds and waterfowl like ducks, geese and barnyard birds like chickens. Once a single bird in a flock is infected, the disease goes unstoppably ballistic. But wild turkeys and waterfowl don’t interact much. Even so, with Wisconsin’s wild turkey hunting season beginning, Finger advised against approaching any bird that seems sick — turkey or otherwise.
