WINONA, Minn. – The June drought has left Winona County farmers looking to the rain gods. The latest update from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows northern parts of the county abnormally dry. Southern parts are drier — in a moderate drought. The county Farm Service Agency director, Jon McRae, said that recent rains may help but that a continued dry stretch would be problematic. Half the corn crop is in a poor rating, McRae said in a radio station KWNO interview. “This time of year, that’s concerning.” Soybeans also rely heavily on rainfall. The season is still young, however, McRae noted: “There’s a chance we could work our way back out of it.”
