CAMP DOUGLAS, Wis. – Occasional sonic booms may reverberate through the Coulee region through August 23 from planes in combat training exercises out of Volk Field. Colonel Bart Van Roo, who is in charge, said the booms could extend as far out as 200 miles. “We appreciate everyone’s patience,” Van Roo said. “It is a necessary part of preparation for actual combat.” The exercises are from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. About 50 aircraft and 1,000 personnel are engaged in the exercise, called Northern Lightning, to test adversary aircraft, electronic jamming and surface-to-air threats.
