MINNEAPOLIS – Police and state troopers surrounded more than 600 people who marched onto eastbound Interstate 94 near Cedar Avenue and blocked traffic. One by one, protestors were hauled off and booked on public nuisance citations and then released, also one by one. The blockage began about 7:40 p.m. The booking process ended 5-1/2 hours later. Traffic was restored. Police said that neither force nor chemical irritants was used. No one was hurt, police said.
Who were protesters
The Twin Cities Coalition for Justice 4 Jamar organized a street demonstration earlier in the evening. The goal was to demand prosecution of police officers in the 2015 fatal shooting of Jamar Clark, a 24-year-old black man. Posters asked for racial justice. Seemingly unrelated were a few posters decrying President Donald Trump’s efforts to “steal the election.” The street protest ended up on I-94, whether by design or not was unclear.
