MADISON, Wis. – Governor Tony Evers urged a peaceful response when the jury returns its verdict in an Illinois teen’s homicide trial stemming from street riots in August. Evers had two messages:
> Remain safe and peaceful.
> Don’t upset Kenosha’s efforts to heal.
Said Evers: “Any efforts to sow division and hinder that healing are unwelcome in Kenosha and Wisconsin.” Evers did not dissuade against protests from either side, acknowledging the First Amendment right to assemble, but, he added, be peaceful. The governor has 500 National Guard soldiers on duty outside Kenosha if needed. During the trial there have been small gatherings outside the courthouse. Police have made a couple of arrests.
