MADISON, Wis. – Governor Tony Evers vetoed a series of bills passed by the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature that would have imposed new restrictions on voting, including absentee ballots. Evers, a Democrat, said the bills were aimed at voter suppression and violated democratic principles. Senate Republicans don’t have enough votes to override Evers’ veto. Republicans argued that they wanted merely to ensure clean elections – although there has been nil evidence of wrong-doing. Even so, the state GOP apparatus has engaged in multiple tactics to damage Democrats in the future in key counties that went against Trump in the 2020 election. The party is still smarting from Trump’s loss in Wisconsin, as well as nationally. The upshot has been efforts around the country to create hurdles to voting, particularly in Democratic areas.
