MOORHEAD, Minn. – A Moorhead man was sentenced to 30-1/2years in prison for the murder of a 19-year-old woman whose body he dismembered. Authorities recovered the remains of 19-year-old Dystynee Avery in a landfill in April 2020. The body, packed into trash bag, had been sawed into pieces. When arrested, Broad claimed self-defense. He said that Avery had swung a pipe at him in their Moorhead apartment. In anger, he “stuck a knife in her throat.” Broad pleaded guilty in January but changed his mind a few weeks later and tried to withdraw the plea. Judge Tammy Merkins would have nothing to do with a plea change and scheduled sentencing.

Broad. Sentenced 13 months after knifing and dismembering flatmate.
