HOMER, Minn. – The Army Corps of Engineers resumed dredging the Mississippi River downstream from Winona and its controversial piling of the muck riverside at Homer. This time, however, the Corps plans move the dredged material out of Homer to two construction sites that need fill:
> A Highway 61 round-about in the Winona’s East End hotel district.
> A Highway 35 bridge across the Trempealeau River at Marshland. Wisconsin.
The Corps’ contractor, LS Marine of Inver Grove Heights, will remove 25,000 cubic yards of river sand. Paul Machajewski, a Corps manager, said it’s great to see so many option for the river sand to be reused within the community. The dredging will continue least a few weeks, Machajewski said.
