MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Milwaukee scion to an investment fortune, Alex Lawry, dropped out of the Democrat primary race for the U. S Senate. Lawry’s decision left only Manela Barnes and Sarah Godlewski for the Democratic nomination to oppose Republican incumbent Ron Johnson. In campaigning, Lasry emphasized his work an executive with the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team owned by his family. He pointed to the Bucks’ arena as beng built largely with Wisconsin products and by union workers. For his candidacy Lasry held strong union endorsements.
Polls influenced Lasry
The national Democratic party has seen Republican Senator Ron Johnson as vulnerable. But Lasry said the national leadership appropriately had stayed clear of internal state politics pending the August 9 primary. It was his own internal polling, Lasry said, that showed Barnes ahead of him by 14 points. He did acknowledge, however, that he spoke a couple of times with U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, also a fellow Democrat, for advice. “After talking with Tammy and seeing the data, it was just clear that Mandela was going to be the nominee,” he said. The third major candidate in the Democratic primary, state Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, trailed Barnes by 27 points, sources said. Godlewski, an energetic campaigner, has not hinted whether she’s reconsidering her candidacy.
