ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senate and House committees are revisiting the legal language of a moratorium on evictions of renters who fell behind during the Covid pandemic. In rental-heavy places like Winona, landlords have reported abuses, State Senator Jeremy Miller, R-Winona, said in a KWNO radio interview. Miller acknowledged that there remain tenants who are unable to pay rent, but, he added, there also are renters who have the wherewithal to pay but are freeloading. “I’ve had several stories from landlords tell me that they’ve had people say I have the money, but I’m not going to pay because the governor said I don’t have to.” Time to rescind the moratorium? Perhaps, Miller said. State Representative Gene Pelowski, D-Winona, said tenants who are behind can contact RentHelpMN.org.
