DETROIT, Mich. — Mariners’ Church of Detroit observed the 45th anniversary of the sinking of the ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald. The Fitzgerald, fully loaded with 25.4 tons of taconite, plunged to the bottom of Lake Superior in a storm with 25-foot waves. All 29 crew members were lost. The wreck was immortalized by folk singer Gordon Lightfoot.
