LACROSSE, Wis. – Two former City Council members, Lorraine Decker and Tom Sweeney, called on the mayor to veto a new ban on therapies that purport to cure homosexuality. The Council banned such so-called “conversion therapy” last week. Mayor Mitch Reynolds has veto authority over Council actions. Meanwhile, Decker and Sweeney have organized a rally against the ban outside City Hall. They argue that the ban interferes with freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and parental rights. The ban is based on the medical profession’s consensus that conversion therapy, also called “reparation therapy,” is psychologically damaging and doesn’t work.
