LACROSSE, Wis. – The City Council voted 6-4 to ban so-called “conversion therapy” that purports to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. The practice has been debunked by the medical profession as ineffective and endangering. The new LaCrosse ordinance applies to minors. In effect, it bars parents from putting their kids into such programs. LaCrosse is the 14th Wisconsin city to ban conversion therapy. City Council member Mac Kiel, who sponsored the ordinance. said the law protect young people from psychologically dangerous quackery.
