WELLS, Wis. – The storm that ravaged parts of three states Thursday and destroyed farm buildings and equipment southeast of Sparta was tornadic, a National Weather Service inspection team has concluded. There were no injuries. Inspectors said the tornado was on the ground a quarter of a mile and was 35 yards wide. With peak winds estimated at 85 mph, the team rated the tornado an EF-0. The touchdown, at 8:20 p.m. lasted only a minute. Destroyed were a shed and farm equipment inside. A camper was picked up and smashed into a tree 100 feet away. Farm equipment was flipped over in a field. The storm also damaged trees on the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail. The trail will be closed several days for clean-up.
