MANTORVILLE, Minn. – A Minnesota woman, Lois Riess, 58, of Blooming Prairie, known as the Fugitive Grandma, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing her husband before going on the run. In Florida she then killed a woman. Reiss already was tried in Florida for the second death and was sentenced to life in prison. Now also convicted in Minnesota, Riess begins somehow serving two life sentences for two murders in two states. Before sentencing Tuesday in Mantorville, Riess apologized to her husband’s friends and family. Life without her husband was her true sentence, Riess said. After she had shot and killed her husband in 2018, Riess drove to Florida, befriended a woman at a Fort Myers Beach condo, and shot her fatally. Reiss’ explanation: She and the woman looked alike and she wanted to steal her identity.
