STILLWATER, Minn. — Tax evasion charges were filed against the former Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of George Floyd, the Black man who has become a martyred symbol for the Black Lives Matter movement. Darek Chauvin and his wife Kellie May Chauvin underreported their income by $464,000, according to court documents. With unpaid taxes, interest and fees, the state claims they owe $37,800. Prosecutor Imran Ali said the charges relate only to Minnesota taxes, not federal taxes or taxes in Florida, where the couple has a second home. The unreported income, according to court documents, was from Derek Chauvin’s off-duty security jobs at several locations, including El Nuevo Rodeo restaurant. Kellie Chauvin, a real estate agent who also operated a photography business. received 340 checks totaling $66,400 that were not reported as income, the documents said. The documents allege, too, that the Chauvins failed to pay sales tax on a $100,000 BMW. Prosecutors say that they car was bought in Minnetonka but that listed Florida as their home. Car taxes are less in Florida.
