WINONA, Minn. – An assistant coach at South Dakota State University, Brian Bergstrom, has been hired as Winona State’s head football coach. Bergtrom replaces the popular Tom Sawyer, who retired this fall after almost 200 victories in 25 years including six playoffs. Most recently Bergstrom has been the defensive coordinator for the South Dakota State Jack Rabbits.  He also coached the program’s safeties.  Bergstrom has coached 17 years. Winona State Athletics Director Eric Schoh said Bergstrom has a strong network of recruiting connections. He coached earlier at Augustana and at Gustavus, his alma mater.  When he was at Augustana, the college won a share of the 2015 Northern Sun conference South Division title.  That same year, Augustana earned a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs. In his five years at South Dakota State, the Jack Rabbits played five consecutive playoffs and earned three trips to national semifinals, including a runner-up finish. In his new Winona State position Bergtrom earns $110,445.
