DEER RIVER, Minn. – A Deer River man was killed when his car slid out of control into the oncoming lane and was T-boned by a pickup carrying four travelers from southern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Jacob Jeffrey Starck, 25, died outright. Treated for non-life threatening injuries at the Deer River clinic were:
> Joseph Leonard Speltz, 38, of Blaine.
> Thomas Robert Speltz, 43, of Trempealeau, Wisconsin.
> Eric John Speltz, 45, of Winona.
> Robert Lee Speltz, 73, of Blair, Wisconsin.
The accident was about 7:30 a.m. on Highway 146 eight miles north of Deer River. Starck was southbound in a 1996 Saturn SL1 sedan. The other four men were headed north toward Lake Winnibignoshish in a 2014 Toyota Tundra pickup. Conditions were slippery, deputies said.
