MINNEAPOLIS – First-term Congress member Ilhan Omar, a Democrat, was swept to re-election in the face of incessant attacks from President Trump. Omar defeated Republican challenger Lacy Johnson with 64 percent of the vote in the MN-5 District. Asked about Trump’s attacks on her as a woman of Somali heritage, Omar said: “People are tired of having hate be the center of the political debate. We win on ideas.” She called health care the key issue. People want Medicare for all, she said.
‘GOP boogey-man’
About Trump attacks on her, Omar said: “Republicans have a woman problem. Women have been the boogey-man for Republicans. But I welcome that. It has helped us boost turnout here in our district. For many of my colleagues who have had these ads against them, they have help galvanize their base.”
