PRESTON, Minn. — The defense attorney for one of the twins in a fatal 2023 crash with an Amish buggy, Samantha Petersen, asked that 18 of the 21 charges be dropped. Probable cause is lacking, said attorney Carson Heefer. In a 22-page brief to the judge, Heefer said the search warrant to collect a blood sample was 37 hours after the crash –far  too late to be meaningful. Heefer also asked the judge to throw out an audio recording between Samantha and her twin Sarah in a sheriff deputy’s vehicle at the scene. The twins did not know they were being recorded, Heefer said.
