WINONA Minn. – A driver swerved to avoid a pedestrian crossing busy Broadway Avenue on the East End but nonetheless hit and seriously injured the man, police said. The man, initially identified only as 79 years old and from Minnesota City, was taken to the Winona hospital, then transferred o a higher-level trauma center. The accident was about noon between St. Charles and Zumbro streets. The man, police said, was not in a crosswalk.  He was starting across Broadway from the south curb.
