WINONA, Minn. The Winona law enforcement community paid respects to fallen officers at a remembrance ceremony 1-1/2 weeks before Memorial Day to fallen. Honored were:
> Mathew Hamilton, age 51, a city police officer, who died of heart exertion in 1874 after being choked by a vagrant being removed from Winona & St. Peter train depot.
> John Schneider, age 55, a sheriff’s deputy, who died in 1980 when shot while investigating a domestic assault on on Ontario Lane in Goodview.
> Ted Foss. , age 35, a State Patrol trooper, who was hit by a passing truck during a traffic stop on Interstate 90 e in 2000.
About 130 persons gathered at the joint city-county police station Speakers included County Attorney Karin Sonneman, Sheriff Ron Ganrude, and Mayor Scott Sherman. Taps were offered by bugler Jerry Obieglo.
