WINONA, Minn. – The superintendent of Winona schools, Annette Freidheit, stood at the front of the auditorium, opened a book, and began reading to the staff and faculty assembled to start the new school year. Her message was from “I Am One: A Book of Action” by Susan Verde with illustrations by Pete. Reynolds. It’s a book about coming together, which Freiheit said fit perfectly with the theme of the new school year — One Winhawk.

Verbatim

Verde: “One seed to start a garden, one note to start a melody, one brick to start breaking down walls: Every movement and moment of change starts with purpose, with intention, with one. With me. With you.”

Empowering goodness. Winona Schools chief Annette Freihein turned to the 32-page “I Am One” for messages written for grade-schoolers, and everyone else, on making a difference.
