A tip from Carly Rice at Miss Carly’s homeless shelter in the Midtown of Rockford, Illinois, led to the arrests of two prison escapees. The shelter is run by Carly Rice and Jacob Rush who live at the place, a former Buddhist temple. They invite people in for food, clothing and a nonjudgmental ear. No identification is required. The goal: Making needy people comfortable. “We are trying set up a different dynamic here,” Rice said. “The people we serve, they have been hurt. And they have made a lot of mistakes, and they have burned bridges, and they need a different approach.” Tents, bedding and clothing are given to homeless who camp in the neighborhood. Meals are served 3 to 5 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Meals also are available at the door anytime. Last Thanksgiving 150 people showed up for turkey. Goody bags were distributed — winter coats, gloves, socks, and games for children. Narcan training for opioid emergencies is offered on-premises by the Rockford Fire Department and nearby Swedish American Hospital.
