WINONA, Minn. – Betty May Monroe,  94 of Winona, who volunteered at the Winona Historical Center and the Winona Arts Center .died at age 94. She graduated from high school in Marquette, Iowa, at age 16 as salutatorian and began work with the phone company. She graduated from Elkader Junior College with a teaching certificate and taught in a country school but remained  with the phone company part-time.  The kids called her “Mother Bell.” She moved upward and retired after 41 years as manager of a Bell computer staff.  In Winona she was vice-moderator of the First Congregational church council. She helped create a timeline of church history.
