WINONA, Minn. – Cleo LaVonne (Heiden) McMillen, who taught at Winona State University where she was director of student teaching. died at age 89. Earlier she was director of reading and study skills at Saint Mary’s College. She grew up on a farm near the Winona County hamlet of Hart. She earned a master’s degree in eElementary education at Winona State and a master’s at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Earlier she she sewed custom draperies for the Emporium in Saint Paul; was head of catering at USD in Vermillion, South Dakota; and taught in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Before a stroke in 2019, wintered in Arizona and spent weekends at estate sales and gardening and in the kitchen.
