SPARTA, Wis.  – Fred K. Saecker, 70, of Sparta, a passionate advocate for prisoners and the Innocence Project, died  at Mayo Franciscan hospital in La Crosse. He himself was the first person in Wisconsin to be exonerated by DNA evidence. He was exonerated after seven years in prison. He had been arrested after a vicious assault while walking home on the Interstate Bridge in LaCrosse. He was in LaCrosse. In high school, he became a competitive swimmer.
