ST. PAUL, Minn. – A renewal of tax credits for rehabilitating historic buildings is included in tax relief legislation that has cleared the Minnesota Senate. State Senator Jeremy Miller, R-Winona, who sponsored the historic rehab tax credit, said it will encourage more historic preservation in downtown Winona. “The historic tax credit has helped create jobs, provide economic activity and in the downtown area,” Miller said. He pointed to a University of Minnesota study that concluded that $1 of state support for historic renovation generates $9.50 in economic activity. The next step in the legislative process will be a House-Senate joint committee to resolve differences in the chambers’ separately developed tax legislation in which the historic renovation provision is part.
